Having the same problem I think its is because the column is of Ntype ie nvarchar2, nchar.

If I create a dummy table with a varchar column, the index is created ok.

How did I get it to index on a column of Ntype.

Apart from the fact that this thread was started 1380 (!) days ago, all of this can be found in the Oracle Text Documentation (the part about supported column types seems interesting Very Happy). If that is not sufficient: log in to MetaLink and have a look at Note:233180.1

MetaLink is Oracle's official support site. Ask your Oracle responsable for the account details and go to http://metalink.oracle.com.

We don't have any a current support contract.
I just need to know if it is possible to create a CONTEXT index on a column of type nvarchar2.
On http://www.lc.leidenuniv.nl/awcourse/oracle/text.920/a96517/cdefault.htm#1006336

It indictaes this column type is not supported, but I just need a definite answer.

Thanks.

Is there a simple explaination why you cannot create these indexes on nvarchar2 columns, when you can on varchar2 columns. I will just need to explain why.
Thanks.

(deep breath)
they
..
are
..
not
..
supported.

from your link

With Oracle Text, you can create a CONTEXT index with columns of type VARCHAR2, CLOB, BLOB, CHAR, BFILE, XMLType, and URIType.
I don't see NVARCHAR2 mentioned there.

That's your simple explanation. There's nothing more to it.

Oracle Text does not offer Text index support for the following datatypes:
  • NCLOB
  • NVARCHAR2
  • NCHAR
  • DATE
  • NUMBER
  • TIMESTAMP

I am not an oracle expert like yourself. You could have avoided this thread by simply saying all that in the first place. I guess you learned something from that site too, and are not just as clever as you may think you are!

Easy my friend, I didn't intend any disrespect with my previous reply but you had already seen the documentation that said exactly what datatypes are supported...
"That site" is just a copy of the manuals and I seem to recall having pointed you exactly to those manuals Wink. In case you need a direct link: http://tahiti.oracle.com
And you're welcome, it's nice to be appreciated (tongue in cheek).
