can anyone please tell me what a complex flat file is,
in context of ETL, when we say the source is a
"complex flat file"...in what way is it different from a
normal flat file?

GOOGLE is your friend, but only when you actually use it!

anacedent, did you actually read any of these google pages? I did, and I didn't find anything that said COMPLEX FLAT FILE meant anything.

What was the URL of the web page from whence you got a formal definition for COMPLEX FLAT FILE please?

Kevin

Thanks buddy, I get it, a COMPLEX FLAT FILE is anything not simple.

That means, it contains some kind of "object style" datatype (an array, multiple/variable record types, compressed data, etc.).

Think, "a file that won't load into excel".

Much appreciated, Kevin

Yes, probably more likely to be mainframe files in EBCDIC format, containing multiple data structures, and even varying data structures in the same logical field.

You will find it very difficult (if not pretty much impossible) to load these up without a file definition to work from.
