I downloaded 11g for dev purposes. I can open SQL*Plus directly, but when I type the following in the command prompt:

set oracle_sid=db11g
sqlplus /

It names the SQL*Plus version it's trying to open but throws the following error:
ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error

I wonder how I can figure out why this is happening?

Thanks,
Nathan

ORACLE_SID variable name and/or value in upper case?
Wrong ORACLE_SID?

Thank you very much Michel. I mis-interpreted what the ORACLE_SID was supposed to be. (btw it's not case-sensitive)

Nathan

It is the name of the Oracle service, you can find it in Windows Services box (just the last part after "OracleService).
