I had a discussion at lunch time with an intern at my workplace. Discussion started about mentioning date of birth on public forums. Especially, when it comes to technical forums.

Most of the forums(generally speaking, since few sites claim they are not a forum) have an option to mention date of birth, age etc. Either mandatory or mostly optional. What does it actually mean? How does it matter practically?

Whether such an input is demanded at registration page or not, does age really matters?

It depends on the value one places on that word a lot of managers don't understand: experience.

Having said that, one cannot always infer wisdom from somebody's age Wink

It reminds me a quote :

"Knowledge matters, not age".

Yet knowledge can be a function of age Smile

or NOT!

Some folks may have "5 years experience" on paper; when in reality it is year 1 repeated FIVE times.

Of course age matters, so that we can decide who is allowed to tell who to get the hell off their lawn. Wink

Other than that, age is indeed perhaps the "simplest" experience indicator. Not only professional experience, but also an indication of "the times experienced".

Then again, I never felt an urge to specify by date of birth it in my profile.

Being a boring old man, I find it hard to trust a technician who cannot remember MSDOS and the Apple 2. I feel that people brought up with Windows and Mac may not have sufficient experience of problem solving. You were on your own back then.
I also think that vi should be taught in the kindergarten.

No one should be able to use a GUI without first understanding the command line. And you're spot on with vi, John.
